Fraud Friday - Credit and Debit Card Scams
Hi, everyone. I'm Markita from South Carolina Federal and with financial scams on the rise, I'm here to help you keep your hard-earned money secure.
Scammers are always coming up with new ways to steal your personal information, but don't worry! We've got some tips to help you stay safe. Beware of these credit and debit card scams.
- I received a call from someone claiming they need my card information to pay a bill. Should I send them my card details?
- No. You should never share your PIN or card number over the phone, email, or text message. Be cautious with your card information and if you are unsure what to do, reach out directly to your financial institution.
- I received a message from a number claiming to be my financial institution, instructing me to click on a link. Should I click on it?
- No. You should never click on any links in an unsolicited text message or email. This is a common tactic used by scammers to download malware onto your device and steal your personal information.
- I've noticed a few unexpected charges on my account that I didn't authorize. What should I do?
- Contact your financial institution as soon as you can. If you haven't already, enable card alerts to receive real time notifications for transactions so you can quickly spot any unauthorized activity.
- I received a message instructing me to wire money and lied to the representative about the reason for the transfer. Should I wire the money?
- No. You should never wire money to anyone you do not know or lie to a representative about the reason for the wire because this makes it more difficult to recover your funds. If you suspect any fraudulent activity, don't hesitate to reach out to your financial institution as soon as you can.
